Grant Overview
Indiana's agricultural landscape consists of large contiguous row-crop counties in the central region and smaller, more fragmented operations near the Ohio River and in the northeastern lake district. Sustainable-practice workshops must therefore address soil types that range from deep loess to poorly drained glacial till within a single program season. Readiness for these workshops depends on the availability of county-level extension staff who can adapt curricula to local drainage and tillage constraints.
Many rural cooperatives lack updated soil-health demonstration plots or calibrated soil-sampling equipment. Without these assets, farmers cannot verify that reduced-tillage or cover-crop methods produce measurable changes in organic matter or infiltration rates. The resulting information gap limits willingness to adopt new techniques even when cost-share funds exist.
The grant finances workshops that include on-farm demonstration plots and equipment loans. Eligible applicants are Indiana nonprofits or cooperatives that can secure at least three host farms within the proposed county cluster and provide baseline soil-test data collected within the prior 12 months. Budgets must allocate separate line items for plot establishment, sampling kits, and post-season analysis.
Applications are scored on the number of distinct soil-management regions covered and on documented partnerships with Purdue Extension or local soil and water conservation districts. Projects that schedule sessions outside peak planting and harvest windows receive higher marks. Unlike neighboring states, Indiana requires that workshop curricula reference the state's specific nutrient management regulations under the confined feeding rule.
Awardees submit final reports containing aggregated soil-test results and participant attendance verified by county extension signatures. These data are archived by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture for use in subsequent program design.
