Summary

This grant opportunity is aimed at for-profit dairy farms, manufacturers, and processors located in an eleven-state region in the U.S. Midwest. The purpose is to support businesses that are innovating in the dairy sector, by developing value-added products, diversifying operations, enhancing dairy by-products, expanding exports, or adopting more sustainable practices in production or packaging. The grants are intended to help strengthen the dairy industry at both business and regional levels.

There are two main grant tracks. One is focused on business-builder type projects such as diversifying, value-added product development, by-product usage, and marketing. The other emphasizes industry-impact projects including sustainability measures like energy efficiency, packaging innovation, or export expansion. Each track offers reimbursement grants up to $100,000 for eligible expenses. In some cases for large equipment purchases, the maximum award may go higher, around $150,000, due to increased cost of such items.

Eligible applicants must be businesses with operations in one or more of the states in the DBIA region, have a valid Employer Identification Number, comply with federal and state requirements such as milk grading if applicable, and meet other eligibility criteria such as not being closely connected to decision-makers of the program. Past recipients may apply again but must propose a distinct project or phase.

Funds may be used for expenses directly tied to the project such as supplies, equipment, marketing, export-related costs, or implementation of sustainable or environmental improvements. The grants are reimbursable, which means recipients incur the expense, document it with invoices or receipts, and then are reimbursed up to the award amount. Reporting requirements, such as surveys at six and twelve months, are part of the program.

The geographic scope covers Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
