Indiana's oncology workforce capacity is constrained by a 34 percent vacancy rate in certified radiation oncology technologist positions outside the Indianapolis metropolitan area, according to 2023 Indiana State Department of Health licensing data. Academic medical centers in Indianapolis and regional hospitals in Evansville and Fort Wayne compete for the same limited pipeline of post-doctoral researchers trained in novel radiotherapy planning.
Infrastructure constraints include aging linear accelerator fleets in non-urban counties and limited high-speed data links required for real-time dosimetry review. These gaps restrict the scale of treatment-innovation studies that can be conducted without repeated travel to Indianapolis core facilities.
Workforce readiness requirements under this grant specify that applicant institutions must maintain active accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs and provide documented access to at least two staffed linear accelerators for any clinical trial arm involving radiation. Budgets must allocate separate line items for technologist overtime during protocol ramp-up phases.
Applications are evaluated on the number of new certified personnel projected to complete training within the grant period and the percentage of those personnel assigned to sites outside Marion County. Indiana proposals must demonstrate that requested equipment upgrades cannot be met through existing statewide purchasing consortia before additional funds are considered.
