Grant Overview
Indiana farm-to-table initiatives must demonstrate compliance with Indiana State Department of Health cottage food regulations and obtain county-level health department permits before serving any prepared items to participants. Eligibility is limited to organizations located in counties where the percentage of residents reporting food insecurity exceeds 13 percent according to the most recent Feeding America county-level map.
Programs are required to partner with Indiana Farm Bureau-affiliated producers within a 150-mile radius and submit soil test results from participating plots to verify alignment with Purdue University extension nutrient management guidelines. Youth cohorts must include measurable numbers of participants from households where at least one adult is employed in row-crop or livestock operations.
Indiana’s dual concentration of large-scale corn and soybean production alongside smaller specialty crop farms produces different supply chain considerations than states dominated by dairy or fruit production. Funding therefore favors proposals that schedule growing cycles around the state’s established school calendar rather than year-round models used elsewhere.
Transportation constraints in counties lacking direct interstate access require documented use of existing school district or extension vehicle fleets. This infrastructure reality distinguishes Indiana applications from those in states with denser regional transit systems.
