Indiana’s Barrier of Fragmented Health Infrastructure Indiana’s 92 counties contain only 14 Indian Health Service–recognized facilities, leaving large portions of the state without routine access to culturally aligned care. American Indian families in rural counties travel an average of 78 miles to the nearest clinic offering both traditional wellness and standard behavioral-health services. This distance compounds the cost of time off work and childcare, reducing participation rates in multi-session programs.

Who Encounters These Distances Census data show 28,000 Indiana residents identifying as American Indian or Alaska Native, with the largest concentrations in Marion, Allen, and Lake counties. However, 41 percent reside in counties without any tribal clinic.
