Grant Overview
Indiana's conservation training capacity remains limited by the distribution of trained personnel. Only four institutions hold full American Institute for Conservation accreditation within state borders, all located in the Indianapolis-Carmel-Anderson corridor.
Manufacturing employment in automotive and pharmaceutical sectors absorbs much of the available technical workforce, leaving volunteer conservation programs dependent on retirees. The state's 92 counties include 31 with zero registered conservators, creating sharp regional disparities in historical artwork maintenance capability.
Interstate highway density facilitates material transport, yet rail service contractions since 2008 have increased delivery times for specialized conservation supplies to the southwestern quadrant by 11 days on average.
Organizations must demonstrate that training cohorts will reach a minimum of 15 volunteers per session and that each participant commits to 120 documented hours of supervised work within 18 months. All curricula require pre-approval from the Indiana Historical Bureau to ensure alignment with state historical marker standards.
Unlike Ohio applications, Indiana mandates proof that training sites maintain separate HVAC zones for solvent-based treatments and that emergency response plans have been filed with county hazardous materials teams.
