Grant Overview

Indiana School Garden Operations Requirements

Indiana school districts seeking garden project support must operate within the 92 counties and maintain a minimum of 120 instructional days per year. Districts with existing agricultural education programs receive scoring preference only if they document that garden plots will serve elementary students not already enrolled in FFA chapters.

Operational constraints include Indiana’s short growing season and clay-heavy soils in the central till plains, requiring raised-bed construction and season-extension equipment. Transportation limits appear in districts where students attend consolidated schools more than 12 miles from potential garden sites. Workforce constraints involve the requirement that any paid garden coordinator hold either a valid Indiana teaching license or a certificate from Purdue Extension’s master gardener program.

Implementation requires submission of soil test results from a certified Indiana laboratory, a crop plan limited to varieties approved by the Indiana State Department of Health for school consumption, and a maintenance schedule covering the full calendar year including summer months. Annual reports must include pounds of produce donated to school cafeterias and student hours logged.

Indiana’s centralized school funding formula creates different operational realities than in Michigan or Ohio, where local levies more frequently cover garden maintenance. Proposals must therefore itemize costs that cannot be absorbed by existing corporation budgets.
